A pedestrian bridge over the Indrayani River in Pune, India, collapsed on Sunday, June 15, 2025, resulting in four fatalities and at least 51 injuries. While rescue operations concluded on Monday morning, initially there were reports of multiple people
The incident occurred around 3:15 PM on Sunday, June 15, 2025.
Casualties and Rescues:
- Four people have been confirmed dead.
Three of the deceased have been identified as Chandrakant Salve, Rohit Mane, and Vihaan Mane, with the fourth remaining unidentified. - At least 51 people sustained injuries, with some critically, and were admitted to various hospitals.
Most of the injured are reported to be out of danger. - Over 50 people were rescued from the site. Initially, some people were feared to have been swept away by the rain-fed river.
- The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and fire department conducted extensive rescues operations.
Structural Weakness and Rust: The 32-year-old iron bridge was reportedly old and rusted, and had been declared "unfit for travel" or unsafe prior to the collapse.
Overcrowding: A major contributing factor was the excessive number of tourists on the bridge. The bridge was designed for pedestrians, but at the time of the collapse, an estimated 100 to 300 people,a along with several two-wheelers, were on the structure. Warning signs prohibiting large gatherings and vehicles were reportedly ignored. - Lack of Maintenance and Audit: Locals had previously raised concerns about the bridge's condition and had even written to authorities demanding repairs and a ban on tourist movement.
There was no structural audit conducted in recent years. - Heavy Rainfall: Heavy rainfall in the days leading up to the incident had led to rising water levels in the Indrayani River, potentially exacerbating the bridge's vulnerability.
Official Response and Aftermat:
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated that the bridge was rusted and gave way due to the heavy load of people.
- Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh (approximately USD $6,000) to the families of the deceased. The state government will also cover the treatment costs for the injured.
- An investigation has been launched into the structural integrity of the bridge and the lack of crowd control measures at the popular tourist spot.
- Instructions have been issued to conduct structural audits of all similar bridges in the state.
A new, more robust bridge was already sanctioned for construction in the area, but work had not begun due to the monsoon season.
